16. My Design Process: From Concept to Installation
Interior design is so much more than choosing beautiful furniture or picking the perfect paint color. A truly successful space is the result of a thoughtful process that transforms ideas into a finished environment that feels intentional, functional, and personal. Every project begins with a vision, but the magic happens through the steps in between.
As a designer, my process focuses on understanding how my clients live, what inspires them, and how their space can best support their daily life. From the first conversation to the final installation day, each phase builds on the one before it to create a cohesive and well-executed design. Today I’m sharing an inside look at my design process, from concept to installation.
Step 1: Discovery Call and Client Vision
Every design begins with listening.
The discovery phase is where I get to know my clients, their lifestyle, and their goals for the space. During this stage, we discuss how the room will be used, what challenges currently exist, and what feeling they want the space to evoke. Some clients want a calm retreat, while others want a space that feels energetic and social.
This is also where we talk about style preferences, inspiration images, budget expectations, and timeline goals. I ask a lot of questions during this stage because great design is not just about aesthetics. It is about creating a space that truly works for the people who live in it.
By the end of the discovery phase, I have a clear understanding of the vision and the foundation for the entire project.
Step 2: Concept Development — Programming
Once I understand the client’s vision, I begin developing the design concept.
This stage is where creativity really comes to life. I begin building a cohesive direction through mood boards, color palettes, materials, and textures. I explore different furniture styles, finishes, fabrics, lighting, and architectural details that will shape the space.
The goal of the concept phase is to create a strong visual story. Everything should work together, from large furniture pieces to the smallest decorative details. This ensures the design feels intentional rather than random.
Clients review the concept presentation so we can refine and adjust the direction before moving forward into detailed planning.
Step 3: Space Planning and Design Details — Schematics
After the concept is approved, we move into the technical side of the design process.
This phase focuses on space planning, which is essential for creating a layout that feels balanced and functional. I develop furniture layouts, determine scale and proportions, and ensure the flow of the space supports everyday living.
At this stage we also finalize:
Furniture selections
Lighting plans
Materials and finishes
Custom design elements
Paint colors and wall treatments
Decorative styling direction
Every detail is carefully considered to make sure the final design feels cohesive.
Step 4: Sourcing — Procurement
Once the design plan is finalized, I begin sourcing and ordering all of the elements needed to bring the design to life.
This includes furniture, lighting, textiles, artwork, accessories, and sometimes custom pieces. Many of the items used in professional design projects are sourced through trade vendors or specialty suppliers, which helps ensure quality and uniqueness.
During this stage, timelines are carefully managed. Some pieces may have longer lead times, so coordinating orders and deliveries becomes a key part of the process.
While this phase may seem quiet from the outside, a lot of coordination is happening behind the scenes.
Step 5: Installation Day — Project Development
Installation day is always the most exciting part of the project.
This is when all the planning, sourcing, and design decisions finally come together. Furniture is delivered, artwork is hung, rugs are placed, and lighting is installed. I spend time styling the space with accessories, books, textiles, and decorative pieces to give the room warmth and personality.
The finishing touches are often what make a space feel complete. Pillows, greenery, layered textures, and curated objects help bring life into the design.
Seeing the client experience their finished space for the first time is always the most rewarding moment.
Why the Design Process Matters
Great design rarely happens by accident. A structured design process ensures that every element of the space works together, both visually and functionally.
By following a clear design framework, I am able to guide clients through what can sometimes feel like an overwhelming number of decisions. Instead of guessing what might work, we move step by step toward a thoughtfully designed space.
The result is a home that feels elevated, cohesive, and deeply personal.
Design is not just about creating beautiful spaces. It is about creating spaces that support the way people truly live.
